Woman Charged in DiCarlo’s Embezzlement

By TYLER REYNARD - Staff Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Katherine McCulley was behind bars Friday after she allegedly embezzled an estimated $5,000 from DiCarlo's Pizza on Main Street over a three-month span.

McCulley, 29, of Wheeling was booked into the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville on Thursday evening. She was released Friday afternoon after posting $5,000 bond.

McCulley allegedly was engaged in a discounting scheme while operating the store's cash register. Court documents state she would charge customers the actual price, but allegedly discount the order in the register and pocket the difference. McCulley is accused of taking money from the store from June to September.

Video evidence shows McCulley placing patrons' money on top of the register when the cash drawer is open, and then putting money in her pocket when the transaction is complete, police said.

A store manager told police McCulley had taken an estimated $5,000 over the three months.

Ohio County Magistrate Patricia Murphy arraigned McCulley on a single count of embezzlement Friday morning. Murphy had issued a warrant for McCulley's arrest late last month, but the details of how she was apprehended are unclear.

A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Nov. 5 in front of Ohio County Magistrate Joe Roxby. McCulley's request to have an attorney appointed to represent her in the case had not yet been fulfilled Friday.

If convicted, she faces one to 10 years in prison and a $2,500 fine.
