Police have released additional details surrounding the shooting of a man that occurred on Wheeling Island on Monday night.
Two patrol units and a detective responded to Vermont Street just after 10 p.m. Monday to find Rachel Carney assisting Steven Kyle from her home. Kyle had suffered a single gunshot wound prior to officers' arrival.
Kyle, 21, who has addresses in Cleveland and Florida, told police he answered a knock on Carney's door and an unidentified black male shot him. Carney, 30, who was upstairs at the time of the shooting, called a number of Kyle's friends, one of whom alerted police to what happened.
Police said neither Kyle nor Carney were cooperative with officers at the scene. Kyle was "hesitant to speak with officers and evasive when questioned," a police report states.
Officers searched the home and found a spent 9 mm shell casing on the dining room floor, along with a broken picture frame and some type of spilled liquid. Kyle, however, told police he was outside of the home when he was shot.
Police also recovered a 9 mm handgun from a bedroom dresser. Carney claimed ownership of the gun, but Kimball on Tuesday did not know if officers had confirmed that. He was also unable to say if the gun had been fired, but he noted it was taken into evidence.
Carney said she witnessed a red car with an Ohio registration speeding from the scene following the shooting.
Kyle reportedly was alert while being treated at the scene by Wheeling Fire Department emergency personnel. He was ultimately transported to Wheeling Hospital. His condition was not known Tuesday afternoon.
