Motorists Have Duty Toward Children

November 7, 2012
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Thank heaven an accident in Warwood on Monday resulted in only minor injuries. It was a forceful reminder of the hazards of operating motor vehicles in areas where children are present.

Wheeling police said the Monday incident occurred when an 11-year-old boy apparently ran into the street and slammed into the side of a moving vehicle. Again, the child suffered only minor injuries.

Accidents such as that are virtually impossible to anticipate or prevent. But this one was a warning that children on sidewalks and streets often don't behave safely. Most of us have had to swerve and/or slam on the brakes to avoid hitting a little one.

It's up to motorists to drive alertly and prudently to safeguard the children. Please, keep that in mind.
