BETHLEHEM - The village of Bethlehem plans to erect a second war monument at its Community Park to honor more recent veterans of the War on Terror.

A memorial honoring Vietnam veterans already stands in the park, and a second monument is slated to be placed next to it, according to Mayor Garrett "Rhett" Daniel.

He said the village already has received about $12,000 to erect a veterans memorial commemorating the service of recent veterans. The money has come from the Ohio County Commission, as well as clubs and individuals in Bethlehem, according to Daniel.

He expects the entire $12,000 to be used for the monument. There is the cost of the stone, as well as the expenses incurred for the plaque and it's engraving, he said.

Daniel said the monument should be in place by Memorial Day.

It hasn't been decided yet which war's veterans it will commemorate, but he hopes it will honor those serving in the War on Terror.

"Any reason we can walk on American soil is because of armed forces, and we wanted to do something," Daniel said. "I wanted to do something to honor those serving in the War on Terrorism. It is such a terrible thing, and my heart is with them."

Daniel said he personally holds members of the military in esteem because "their sacrifice is just so great." He added his father was a veteran of World War II.

Those wanting to contribute to the monument should send donations to the Village of Bethlehem, 1 Community Park, Wheeling, WV 26003.
