CEDARVILLE, Ohio - No. 1-ranked West Liberty scored 12 of the game's last 15 points here Saturday and pulled away to a 105-92 victory against Cedarville in the final game of the Don Callan Classic at a jam-packed Callan Athletic Center.
Coach Jim Crutchfield's Hilltoppers (2-0) led for all but a few possessions in the opening half and never trailed after intermission but had a hard time putting the host Yellowjackets (0-2) away.
Marcus Reineke's driving layup had pulled Cedarville within four points, 93-89, with just 4:48 remaining when West Liberty All-American Alex Falk took matters into his own hands.
Falk, who led the Hilltoppers with 26 points, knocked down a pair of free throws to push the count to 95-89 and followed that with a conventional 3-point play for a 98-89 lead with 3:30 remaining.
West Liberty came up empty on its next two possessions but maintained the nine-point margin as the clock ticked under two minutes.
After yet another defensive stop by the Hilltoppers, senior guard Tim Hausfeld dropped in a 25-foot dagger of a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach, 101-89, with just 1:06 remaining.
Hausfeld was a sizzling 6-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc and backed Falk with 24 points. Junior All-WVIAC guard Cedric Harris also had a strong game with 22 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. C.J. Hester joined the double-figure scoring parade with 13 points and a game-high 7 rebounds.
The Yellowjackets got a career-high 29 points from Charleston Southern transfer Zimmy Nwogbo while Daniel Hickman and Caleb Maxwell added 11 points each off the bench.
West Liberty returns to action Wednesday night in an early-season Top 10 showdown against No. 8-ranked Findlay (Ohio). Tipoff at the Oilers' gym is set for 7:30 p.m.
