American Legion Post 1 gave local veterans a thank-you by filling their bellies with a free spaghetti dinner Sunday in celebration of Veterans Day.

Veterans gathered with their families in the post's restaurant dining room to enjoy fresh salad and homemade pasta at the legion's new building, located at 886 16th Street.

"It was great. I can't believe how good it was," Joe Custer, a Vietnam veteran, said while enjoying his dinner.

Pam Lenevich, who provided the ingredients for the dinner, said the meal had two purposes - to honor veterans and to announce the post's new location to the community.

"We want people to know that this post is here, because we lost our other post. Now we're here and we're trying to build it up," Lenevich said.

John Brafchak, adjutant for Post 1, said the new building, which opened in August and includes a restaurant on the first floor that is open to the public, is "one of the best-kept secrets in Wheeling."

Brafchak said a grand opening for the building is set for Nov. 27 with the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce to participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

American Legion Post 1 will have another pasta dinner, free to veterans, with ingredients provided by the Wheeling Elks from 6-8 p.m. Saturday.
