Scrooge Underappreciated

November 20, 2012
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Editor:

Many voters will be disappointed with the results, but few were saddened to see the election of 2012 come to an end. Friendlier days are just around the bend with the advent of the holiday season.

One of the best Christmas stories is "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. Ebenezer Scrooge is the greatly unappreciated main character. Scrooge is a rich, miserable and mean-spirited kind of guy. Yet, when the chips are down, Scrooge meets the challenge. He creates a middle-class job for Bob Cratchit and provides for his coal-warmed health.

Joining with like-minded, well-to-do associates, Scrooge makes life a little better for widows and orphans. Without Scrooge's intervention with the public health system, Tiny Tim would surely have perished.

Best remembered is the magnificent Christmas goose delivered to Bob Cratchit and his family. Scrooge would probably be more favorably remembered if he insisted that his goose be cooked by the government and given out in equal portions to all, whether they paid taxes or not.

Merry Christmas to all and especially Ebenezer Scrooge!
