Not Keeping Up With New Military Role

November 23, 2012
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

In response to then-candidate Mitt Romney's comment during a debate that more attention needs to be focused on adequately funding U.S. defense, President Barack Obama drew liberal cheers for his sarcastic lecture.

"You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916," Obama began, adding, "we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed."

"There are these things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them," Obama continued in an attempt to make it seem as if Romney doesn't understand the modern military.

Well, yes, there are aircraft carriers - but apparently not enough of them, as Romney hinted.

On Wednesday, the Navy said it will have to lessen its carrier presence in the Persian Gulf to one this winter, because the USS Nimitz, one of two carriers normally stationed there, needs repairs. Apparently the Navy doesn't have enough carriers to keep two in one of the most critical places in the world, in terms of U.S. interests.

Yes, the role of the U.S. military has changed. It's a shame Obama doesn't see the armed forces as more than a political punch line.
