BYRD, Gerry (Geraldine) Hanna, of Valley Grove, WV, and formerly of Sewickley, PA,, died peacefully on November 17, 2012, at Liza's Place in Wheeling, WV.
Born May 24, 1923, in Cherry Tree, PA, she was the daughter of the late Herbert C. Hanna and Helen Hutchinson Hanna. Gerry graduated from Bamesboro High School and completed nurse's training in 1945 at Miner's Hospital in Spangler, PA.
Always the consummate caregiver, Gerry's professional nursing career spanned 50 and a variety of experiences beginning with obstetrics at Mc Keesport Hospital, medical surgery at a Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA; pediatrics at DT Watson Home in Leetsdale, PA; school nursing for the Quaker Valley School District, and lastly home health for Sewickley Valley Hospital.
At age 70, she retired to provide full time care for her husband, Henry L. Byrd until his death in 1997. Voluntarily she served the community through Well Baby Clinics, The Sewickley Presbyterian Church, and as a neighborhood nurse who accompanied many friends into the operating or delivery rooms and whose home was always open to those in need.
Upon moving to Sewickley, Gerry became a high school Girl Scout Leader.

Many foreign students were welcomed into her home, but none more so than Joanne Wilson Bates of New Zealand who found a second mom and host family during the 1970-71 school year.
In Wheeling, Gerry was a member of the Newcomers Club.
Gerry valued and nurtured her many dear friendships, some for over 70 years. Socially, she enjoyed the company of her various bridge clubs and was always one to organize social gatherings. Her home had an open door and no one was ever a stranger.
