PINE GROVE - Lance Binegar is kind of in a good news, not-so-good news situation as the season unfolds this week.
Of the 18 girls on his Valley basketball roster, half of them are freshmen. But, of the upperclassmen, three of them are returning starters.
''We have a very young group of girls,'' Binegar said as he enters his second season. ''We are hoping to get a lot of playing time out of two of the freshmen. They are both just about 6-foot, so that should help us in the post.''
Binegar is referring to Erin Brown and Madison Arnolds.
''We are fast and are in good shape,'' Binegar said. ''We have a lot more height this year, which is something we were missing last year.''
Binegar has three seniors in the fold and all will start - Megan Bucher (5-9), Brittany Sivert (5-3) and Samantha Thomas (5-10).
Bucher, a guard, started last season and finished second on the team in most categories. Sivert, also a returning starter and a forward, was the Lumberjills' steals leader.
Thomas will play the center spot.
''We play a run-and-gun style of offense,'' Binegar said. ''We play a 1-2-2 and man-to-man defense and we like to press.''
Junior Karissa Headley (5-10, forward) will return to the starting lineup, while sophomore Sarah Bassett (5-7, forward) will start for the first time.
Other players in the varsity mix include juniors Alisha Carter (5-7, forward) - the team's leading 3-point shooter last season - and Abby Willey (5-3, guard), along with sophomore Megan Martin (5-4, guard).
''We went 6-15 last year, losing to Hundred in the tournament,'' Binegar said. ''We are hoping to improve to a much better mark this season.''
