After another successful season on the football field, Shadyside's Alex Quinn is looking to go out on top on the mat.

''I think last year's success will only drive him more to be successful this year,'' Shadyside coach Scott Kinemond said.

''I'm looking for another successful season out of him this year. I don't know of anything he needs to improve on just to improve on what he's good at now.''

Last season was a memorable one for the Tigers senior.

After finishing second at 119 pounds at the Ron Mauck OVAC Championships in 2010 and missing out on the awards stand a year later, Quinn redeemed himself with the 152-pound title last season.

''He personally hasn't told me what his goals are for this season, but I told the seniors to set team goals and individual goals,'' Kinemond said.

It was part of a banner year for Quinn. He capped his season with an appearance at the Ohio state championships. There, he finished third in his weight class and helped lead the Tigers to a 14th-place finish.

''Alex's strength in wrestling is his style of being in your face and keeping the pressure on the other wrestler and wearing his opponent down,'' Kinemond said.

''As a team leader, Alex shows by hard work in the practice room and helping the younger wrestlers and helping them to improve themselves.''

Kinemond said his prep work for football should pay dividends for wrestling.

''He was lifting for football, which helped him put good weight on,'' he said. ''I don't think Alex playing football affected him at all than maybe it made him a better leader.''
