Supporting Young People a Tradition

December 1, 2012
By THE INTELLIGENCER , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

To Weirton Madonna High School Principal Steve Grasser, there was something unusual about our area when he came here from his previous residence in St. Louis, Mo. He spoke about it Thursday night during the kickoff dinner for the annual Super Six high school football championship event here in Wheeling.

People in St. Louis wondered why there was so much media coverage of high school football in the Ohio Valley, Grasser explained. Some thought it was odd, "something that's not right here."

But it is right, Grasser stressed. Here in the Ohio Valley, "we have our priorities right," he told those at the dinner.

Indeed we do. We at The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register are proud to showcase high school athletics in our sports sections. But we merely provide what our readers want and reflect sentiment throughout our communities.

The Super Six event, in which sponsors and volunteers united to provide high school students a weekend they will remember, also reflects that attitude. Those responsible deserve high commendation.

Are we unusual here in the Ohio Valley? Perhaps - but we also happen to have our priorities solidly in order.
