John Stirewalt

STIREWALT, John Newman, 81, of Wheeling, died on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the home of his son, James Newman, in Knoxville, Tenn. after a brief illness.

Stirewalt, a follower of Jesus Christ, an adoring husband and a loving father, was born on July 14, 1931 in Springfield, Ill., the only child of the late Newman Claude Stirewalt and Genevieve Henton Stirewalt.

A 1953 graduate of the University of Miami, Stirewalt completed post-graduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University in 1979.

Stirewalt served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, mostly in Korea as a broadcaster on Armed Forces Radio. He called himself "Uncle John" on his daily morning show.

He served as a senior vice president at Crown Coal and Coke of Pittsburgh at the time of his death. Stirewalt's career as a coal executive spanned 55 years and also included positions at CONSOL Energy, Y&O Coal and Arch Coal, where he led the company's sales division from 1985 to 1990. Stirewalt also served as reservist for the Cold War-era U.S. Emergency Solid Fuels Administration.

Stirewalt had served as president of the board of trustees at Wheeling Country Day School, as a member of the board of advisors at the Vineyard Church of Wheeling, a trustee for Teen Challenge for New Life and as a trustee of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra. He was a member of the Ft. Henry Club, Wheeling Country Club and Symposiarchs. He was a Life Loyal Sigma Chi. He treasured his 42 years of sobriety.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Joan Marie McCarthy Stirewalt, who died in 2009. He cherished her as his wife for their 51 years together and every moment after her passing.

Surviving are his four adoring children, Genevieve McIntyre and her husband, Scott of McMurray, Pa, Janice Belbeck and her husband, Michael of Oak Ridge, Tenn., James Newman Stirewalt and his wife, Susan of Knoxville, TN and Christopher William Logan Stirewalt and his wife, Mary of Alexandria, Va; and his nine grandchildren, Kathleen Elizabeth McIntyre Morrison and her husband, Sean and Andrew Scott McIntyre, Christine Elizabeth Guzman, Julie Anne and John Michael Belbeck, Sarah Anne and John Newman Stirewalt II and James Newman and Arthur McCarthy Stirewalt.

A worship service will be celebrated in his honor at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 15 at the Vineyard Church, 135 Waddles Run Rd., Wheeling with Pastor Chris Figaretti officiating. There will be a time of fellowship following the service.

Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
