The Dec. 18 deadline for completion of the new Cameron High/Middle School complex is less than a week away, and an inspection Thursday will determine whether it is ready for students.

The West Virginia Fire Marshal's Office will inspect the structure Thursday and determine whether the building will receive its occupancy permit.

A special board of education meeting is planned for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the high school football field locker room. Initial plans called for Tuesday's meeting to be held at the new building, but it was moved to the elementary school after the necessary inspection was not completed.

"The architect and construction manager will be in attendance," Superintendent Fred Renzella said of Thursday's session.

The purpose of the meeting is to have all those involved in one place after the fire marshal finishes the inspection, in case any problems are discovered. Renzella has been checking the construction frequently, and he said contractors are optimistic.

"Right now, they're confident that the inspection should go well," said Renzella.

In preparation for the transition to the new location and new facilities, new classes have begun at Cameron High School that will continue through the second half of the school year. Among these is a Theater 1 class, taught by teacher Whitney Healy, which will take advantage of a brand new auditorium - something the existing Cameron High School never had.

Board President Roger Lewicki offered a public apology to the people of Cameron and Marshall County for the delays in completing the new Cameron High School. He said that he spoke for the current board of education, as well as past members.

"From all of us, we apologize for the delays," said Lewicki. "We're very thankful that you've been so patient."
