Reform Filibuster Rules in New Year

December 30, 2012
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Editor, News-Register:

January 3, 2013 marks an unusual opportunity for the US Senate to reform filibuster rules which currently prevent confirmation of uncontroversial executive and judicial nominees.

West Virginians can influence a very close vote on the following two sensible proposals: To filibuster Senators would be required to go to the Senate floor to explain to the American people why they oppose a bill or nominee. A motion to begin debating a bill, or to send a bill to conference with the House of Representatives, would not be debatable.

Senators Rockefeller and Manchin may be undecided, so please tell them if you favor reform of the filibuster, toll-free: Rockefeller 877-782-8274, Manchin 855-275-5737 and email: www.rockefeller.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/email-jaywww.manchin.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/contact-form Write your message, or use mine: Please support Senators Harken, Merkley, and Udall in their effort to make the 113th Senate accountable for all its rules via a vote on opening day, January 3, 2013.

Please adopt by majority vote Senate rules which allow the majority to act, while protecting the minority's desire to be heard.
