SCHMITT, Jerome Bernard "Jerry," 63, of Wheeling.

After a courageous nine-year battle with cancer, Jerry passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, January 3, 2013.

He was born on August 19, 1949 in Wheeling, a son to the late Lawrence J. and Mary Kay Schmitt.

He was a graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School. He also earned a degree in economics at West Liberty State College and a master's degree from Ohio University. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.

He was a Chartered Financial Analyst and served as an executive vice president at WesBanco Bank in Wheeling, where he was an employee for 40 years. He was the president of the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Jeanne, and her parents, Bill and Dorothy Grubler. He is also survived by three children: daughter Amy Bowman and her husband Carl of Schwenksville, PA, son Jerome "Jeb" and his wife Alyssa of Wexford, PA, and son Luke and his wife Nicole of Wheeling; and four granddaughters: Abigail and Ashley Bowman and Adeline and Emily Schmitt. Also surviving Jerry are his four brothers and two sisters: Eugene Schmitt (Gail), Lawrence "Babe" Schmitt Jr. (Becky), William T. Schmitt (Carol), Peter D. Schmitt (Jayne), Susan Nau (Mike), and Patricia Hartman (Michael).

Friends will be received from 3-8 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Elm Grove, Wheeling. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2013 at St. Michael Catholic Church with Monsignor Kevin Quirk as celebrant.

Jerry was an exceptionally loving husband, an unselfishly devoted father and a constant source of strength and guidance. Please join us in celebrating his wonderful life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley, 1310 Market St., Wheeling, WV 26003.
