GIRLS' BASKETBALL: South Gets Past Shadyside in 2OT

SHADYSIDE - If you looked at the Shadyside's 7-6 record and hadn't seen the Tigers play, you'd think they're just a mediocre basketball team.

Actually, they've lined up and battled against one of the toughest schedules in the Ohio Valley and found themselves on the short end of several close calls.

Chalk up Saturday afternoon's home encounter with Parkersburg South in that category.

The Tigers seemingly ran out of gas down the stretch and it allowed the Patriots to complete the season sweep by a 76-72 count in double overtime.

"Both teams played extremely hard and left it all on the floor," a disappointed Shadyside coach Tina Yates said.

In the second extra session, Shadyside owned a 72-69 upperhand after Hayley Holenka got free on the interior for two of her team-high 25 points.

However, on the ensuing trip down the floor, Taryn McCutcheon beat her girl off the bounce, took contact and softly laid the ball in. She then sank the charity toss to complete the conventional three-point play.

McCutcheon, who pumped in 29 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and passed out six assists, scored on a pull-up jumper to put the Patriots on top for good.

Holenka was complemented in the scoring column by Karli Bonar, who buried five more triples and finished with 23. Andes scored 14.
