OBLINGER, Edith Newman Richter, 97, of New Martinsville, WV, died Sunday, January 13, 2013, in Sistersville, WV.
Edith was born in the Pioneer area of Marshall County. She was the daughter of the late Grady and Effie Cooper Newman and step daughter of the late Pearl Baxter Newman.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Kenneth S. Richter in 1976; her second husband, John N. Oblinger in 2006; three sisters, Pearl, Catherine and Imogene; two brothers, Lewis and Glenn; and a daughter-in-law, Sondra Smith Richter.
She is survived by two sons, Rick (Betty) of Tamarac, FL and Scott (Kathie) of New Martinsville. She also had three step-brothers and three step-sisters. In addition, she is survived by six grandchildren, Rick Richter II, Matt (Diane) Richter, Cindy (Brian) Funk, Kristi (Joel) Dooley, Wendi (Josh) Osborne, and Jeff (Carolyn) Richter; and 11 great-grandchildren, Justin and Alexis Richter, Joel Dooley II, Kaitlyn Richter, Mitchell, Jacob and Alex Funk, Amber, Ella and Grace Richter and Ashlynn Osborne.
Edith took a great deal of pride in having been able to provide guidance to and care for her younger sister and brothers after the death of their mother. Known as Aunt GeeGee by her many nieces and nephews, she always enjoyed visits from them as well as the rest of her family and friends.
Edith had been employed at the former First National Bank in New Martinsville, and, in later years, at the offices of Doctors Terrell and LeMoyne Coffield. She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in New Martinsville, and her church activities occupied much of her time during her life. She was a member of The Order of Eastern Star (Chapter 50) for over 60 years. She was also a very active alumnus of the Class of 1935 of Magnolia High School. In her later years her eyesight was beginning to fail, but she never missed an opportunity to greet everyone who crossed her path.
Visitation will be Friday, January 18, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third Street, New Martinsville, with an Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m.
Visitation also on Saturday, January 19, from 10 a.m. until time of the memorial service celebrating her life at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church, corner of Maple and Locust Street, New Martinsville, with Rev. Dr. Victor Hunter officiating.
