Ryan Carroll arrived at Ohio Valley Medical Center on Sunday seeking medical attention after reportedly falling from a roof, but he left in police handcuffs for allegedly stealing from the purses of hospital employees.
Ohio County Magistrate Joe Roxby arraigned Carroll Monday on four counts of petit larceny. The 25-year-old Triadelphia resident remained in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville in lieu of $4,000 bond late Monday.
Wheeling police responded to a theft report at OVMC around 9:45 p.m. Sunday. Officers were advised that a hospital nurse caught Carroll going through purses in a staff-only break room.
Another man drove Carroll to the hospital earlier that day after Carroll fell from a roof while at work. The other man reportedly was sleeping in the hospital room while waiting for the staff to examine Carroll.
According to court documents, when the nurse found Carroll in the break room, he told her he was looking for the bathroom. The nurse noticed her purse and coat were out of place, and she searched them to discover that some money was missing. She told her fellow staff members about what had happened, and they discovered they were missing money, as well.
Video footage from hospital security cameras reportedly shows Carroll enter the break room, where he remained for about seven minutes before the employee also entered the room.
Carroll exited the hospital before a staff member found him smoking a cigarette in a non-smoking area outside and asked him to return to his exam room, which he did. Police said Carroll smelled of alcohol, had glassy eyes and slightly slurred speech.
The man who drove Carroll to the facility consented to a search of his vehicle, and officers recovered cash in the back seat of the car, as well as other items that hospital staff reported missing.
