SCHAFER, George John, 97, formerly of Wheeling, WV, died Saturday, January 19, 2013, in Cedar Ridge Health Rehabilitation Center, Lebanon, IL.
He was born July 8, 1915, on a farm on Big Wheeling Creek Road, the son of Alvin and Flora Hartlieb Schafer.
Mr. Schafer was a graduate of Triadelphia High School. He co-owned and operated Schafer's Meat Market in Elm Grove with a cousin, John F. Schafer, from 1935 through 1974. He was a long-time member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and later Elm Grove United Methodist Church where he served on various committees and where he was a member of the former Comrades Sunday School Class.
Mr. Shafer was Chairman of Trustees and Pastor Parish Relations Committees, a member of the United Methodist Men's group.
He was a life-long member of the Elm Grove Lion's Club and served as president and chaplain. He was also a Member of the Bates Lodge No. 33 AF & AM, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Osiris Shrine Temple where he received the 50-year award.
Mr. Schafer was a member of the local Car Club Panhandle Region, charter member of the Cantankerous T's; member of the Antique Automobile Club of America, and member of Model T Ford Club of America.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Kimmins Schafer and his brother, Roy Schafer.
Surviving are a daughter, Sally Todd and her husband, Joseph of Friday Harbor, Washington; a son, George Donald Schafer and his wife, Paulette Woitzel Schafer of O'Fallon, IL; two grandsons, Andrew Schafer and his wife Jessica, and Eric Schafer and his wife, Megan; two step-grandchildren, David Todd and Elizabeth Beall; four great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received on Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 1-3 and from 6-8 p.m. at Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger Street, Wheeling.
Services will be held on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Elm Grove United Methodist Church, 125 Kruger Street, Wheeling (304-242-2311) with the Reverend Bryan D. Carpenter officiating.
Internment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.
