ST. CLAIRSVILLE - Bridgeport, which is ranked 7th in the latest Division IV poll, ran its record to a 19-1 and closed out the regular-season portion of its schedule with a repeat, 55-37, victory against homestanding St. Clairsville Wednesday night in girls' basketball action.
"It was a great regular season, and now we're going after the OVAC and sectional," Bulldogs coach Rob Zitzelsberger said. "It's time to get ready for the tournaments."
Next up is the highly anticipated matchup with perennial OVAC and Division IV sectional power Shadyside, which drew the third seed in the upcoming Wheeling Hospital/OVAC Tournament. The Class 2A semifinal will be contested Monday night inside what should be a jam-packed John J. Havlicek Gymnasium.
Despite not shooting well from the field (17-for-55), the Bulldogs used the quickness inside to pound the boards en route to a 14-5 advantage after the first quarter and cruised from there.
Freshman Caitlyn Kroll paced all scorers with a 17-point effort. She was backed by Maclaine Murad with 16 and Nicole Smolenak with a dozen.
Lauren Figura scored scored six of her team-high 11 in the fourth quarter where the Red Devils outscored Bridgeport, 16-8.
Murad and Kroll turned in double-doubles as they snagged 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively, as Bridgeport held a 47-25 advantage off the glass. Twenty-three of those boards were of the offensive variety.
Alicia Avila led the Red Devils with six.
