The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

SONDERMAN, Jerry Joseph "Joe," 75, of Pittsford, VT, died suddenly while visiting family in Ascot, England, on December 23, 2012.

A native of Wheeling, wv, he is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jere Sonderman; four sons, Scot and wife, Sonja of Charlotte, N.C., Sean and wife Alicia of Ascot, U.K., Stephen and wife, Rachel of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and Stewart and wife, Kim of Norcross, GA, and six grandchildren.

Mr. Sonderman was a Graduate of Industrial Design at the University of Cincinnati and served as a Major in the United States Army Signal Corps. An Industrial Designer of national repute, Mr. Sonderman left a lasting mark on the city of Charlotte, and in nearly all 50 states through his company Design/Joe Sonderman, Inc., a Charlotte landmark for over 35 years.

Mr. Sonderman was a devoted family man, a community leader and was a long-time member of the Catholic church.

Joe was involved in numerous philanthropic enterprises, including serving on the board of the Charlotte Men's Shelter for over 12 years. Above all else, he loved to travel and to spend time with his family. In retirement, he and his wife moved to central Vermont.

A man of infectious enthusiasm, to know Joe was to love him.

A memorial service will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Pittsford, VT, on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at 11 a.m. There will be a reception in the church hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to remember Mr. Sonderman to send contributions to his favorite charities: Doctors Without Borders, The Smile Train, and Oxfam.
