Charles Baker

BAKER, Charles "Nick," 70, of Wheeling passed away Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Wheeling Hospital.

He was born August 25, 1942, in Piqua, Ohio, son of the late Luther and Greta Baker.

Nick graduated from Ohio University with a B.A. and Masters in Mathematics and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He taught four years at Wittenberg University, and was an Associate Professor Emeritus at West Liberty State College where he taught for 36 years. While at WLSC, he was the chair of the Mathematics Department and School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Nick was active and served as president in the West Virginia Counsel of Teachers of Mathematics, a member of the Ohio County 4H Board and the Ohio County Board of Education from 1994-2006. He was the 2007 teacher of the year of Mathematics at the college level and won the West Virginia Counsel Teacher of Mathematics Distinguished Service Award in 1994. Nick was a member of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder and Clerk of Session.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Rowena Middleton Baker; two daughters, Tara Merritt and her husband, Mark, of State College, PA, and Dr. Ashlee Mickelson and her husband, Dr. Joey Mickelson, of Guam; three grandsons, Liam Merritt, and Carter and Dexter Mickelson; a brother, Jerry Baker, and his wife, Marsha, of Leetonia, OH; and a sister, Clara Inabnitt, of Columbus, OH.

Friends will be received Wednesday, February 6, 2013 from 3-4:45 at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, 905 National Road, Wheeling, where a memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. with Rev Dr. Charles D. LaPlaca officiating. Interment at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nick Baker Mathematics Scholarship Fund, West Liberty University Foundation, Inc., 208 University Dr., College Union Box 126, West Liberty, WV 26074 and Soup Kitchen, 1610 Eoff St., Wheeling, WV 26003.
