Here in the Northern Panhandle and East Ohio, we have a tradition of ensuring that if our neighbors need a helping hand, it is extended promptly and generously. One of the channels we use to do that is the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley.
Tens of thousands of area residents are touched by charitable organizations affiliated with the United Way. From providing lifelines for battered women to ensuring needy children have decent clothes to wear, United Way agencies provide not just important, but essential services.
A few days ago, United Way officials announced their annual fundraising campaign has resulted in pledges and donations of about $640,000, or 83 percent of the $777,777 goal for this year.
For the past few months, area residents have been asked to help make that goal - an entirely reasonable one for our area - a reality. But more than just a success that allows donors to pat ourselves on the back is involved.
Again, contributions to the United Way make a difference in the lives of thousands of our neighbors, friends and co-workers. Our willingness to help is critical to them.
If you have not yet made a pledge or donation to the United Way, please consider doing so within the next couple of weeks. To do so or to obtain more information, contact the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley at 304-232-4625.
