More than 200 "mathletes" in grades 4-12 competed in the 2013 Ohio County Math Field Day on Friday during its third year at Wheeling Park High School.
The top 10 finishers in grades 10-12 will move on to the RESA 6 Math Field Day competition March 2 at the high school. The top four students from each grade in grades 4-9 also will advance to the regional competition.
Sue Hvizdos, a math teacher at Wheeling Park High School and coordinator of the event, said the competition challenges students in several areas including physical estimation, visual calculation, oral problems, written tests and "mathematical relays." Hvizdos said this year students from St. Michael's Parish School and Wheeling Country Day School were added to the competition, increasing the number of students competing from last year.
Woodsdale Elementary School students Fiona Hutchison, left, and Savana Muraca take part in Math Field Day events Friday at Wheeling Park High School.
"Children shift from one activity to the next, and it's fast-paced," Hvizdos said. "It was a big production. We had a lot of teachers helping, and there were 16 classrooms in use.
"It's growing to be so big. Math Field Day is exciting because some of these students will move on and eventually compete against West Virginia's best and brightest. Competition is always good, and this event is a wonderful learning experience," she added.
The winners in each grade level will compete against teams from Brooke, Hancock, Marshall and Wetzel counties in order to advance to the state competition in April at West Virginia State University in Institute, W.Va.
