The Stone Church Volunteer Fire Department received a $12,578 check from Consol Energy on Friday to purchase new communications equipment.
Jerry Kulpa, communications officer for the VFD, said the upgrades are required.
"Last September there was a mandate put out that all fire departments had to use narrow band radio frequencies by January of this year," he said. "We had a lot of older radios which would not work with narrow band frequencies, so we applied for a grant from Consol Energy and were able to get it."

The money will be used to purchase new communications equipment for the department.
He said the funds would be used to purchase eight fire pagers, five "walkie" radios and three headset units for the pump panels on the department's trucks.
"We're a volunteer department," Kulpa added. "It's hard for us to get funding. This really means a lot to us."
"We're very pleased to present this to a valuable asset to our community," added David Kelly, Consol vice president of Ohio Valley Operations in Moundsville.
"This goes to safety, which is one of our values. It is relevant that it will be used for this equipment. Our first responders are important to us. It will make them better, and that makes us better."
