DALLAS - A natural gas leak reported at about 9:30 a.m. today in the area of the Dallas Post Office caused safety officials to close access to the area and evacuate nearby residents.
Ohio County Emergency Management Agency officials closed roads leading to the area until gas company crews could get to the scene and evaluate the problem.
A nearby church and the West Liberty Center at The Highlands were identified as makeshift shelters for evacuees if needed.
County fire departments responded to the area to assist residents.
EMA Director Lou Vargo said that only a few residents living near the post office were asked to leave their homes and went to stay with neighbors.
He said Mountaineer Gas officials were on the scene at about 10:20 a.m. and were working to correct the problem.
