Rape Trial Day 4: Alleged Victim Concludes Testimony

March 16, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

STEUBENVILLE -- The alleged victim in the rape trial of two Steubenville High School student-athletes completed her testimony shortly after 6 p.m. today.

Under cross examination by defense attorneys, the Weirton girl admitted to telling a few people she had been drugged in the wake of the August incident; subsequent medical testing, however, failed to confirm the presence of any drug in her system. She also told the court she did not know whether she had been drugged or had simply become intoxicated due to drinking alcohol.

The girl also discussed a witness who was granted immunity from prosecution Friday in exchange for his testimony. When questioned about her interactions with the boy, the girl said she had been involved in a prior relationship with him. She also said it was possible that when she asked him about the events of the night in question, his answers could have been an attempt to deflect accusations from himself to one of the defendants.

The girl also acknowledged that she was "interested" in the 17-year-old defendant while attending the parties where the alleged crimes occurred.

Testimony was expected to resume about 6:30 p.m. and to continue throughout the evening. The trial is expected to last at least through Sunday.
