LOCAL COLLEGES: Cardinals Rugby Falls to Salisbury

March 17, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

SALISBURY, Md. - It was a case of too little, too late for the Wheeling Jesuit rugby team Saturday.

Falling behind early to last year's Division II national runner-up, Salisbury University, the Cardinals rallied before falling, 55-40.

Max Lum led the Cardinals with three tries

In contest that saw 14 tries and nearly 100 points between the two sides, a Wheeling Jesuit comeback was not quite enough to topple Salisbury, who is riding a 14-game winning streak.

Tries came fast and furious in the first 10 minutes of the game. Salisbury wasted no time getting on the board with a kick ahead try in the third minute. WJU and Max Lum answered right back with a try just minutes later, then Salisbury returned the favor. Not to be outdone, Sophomore Dante Walters scored off a quick-tap penalty and the Cards led 14-12 after just 10 minutes.

The Cardinals slow start would begin to show however, when Salisbury rattled off four unanswered tries in the next 20 minutes to give the Seagulls a 36-14.

Men's Lacrosse

Bethany 15, Hiram 10

BETHANY - Led by Zach Gordon, who tied a program single-game record with five goals, Bethany established a team scoring mark in defeating Hiram.

The victory also raised Bethany's record to 2-4 overall, the most victories by the Bison in a season since becoming a varsity program in 2011.

Hiram fell to 0-3 with the defeat.

Bethany's 15 goals set a new program high, surpassing the previous mark of 13 set in the 2011 victory over Ohio Valley. Gordon, who scooped a team-best eight ground balls in the victory as well, also matched a BC single-game record with five goals, which was set by Arrington in that Ohio Valley triumph.

Arrington also made his way into the record books, as he registered three assists to tie Gordon's single-game school record established last year when the Bison defeated Alma.

Bethany has found itself behind early in every game this year, but it was the Green and White who struck quickly in this one, as Gordon notched an unassisted goal with just 1:02 off the clock.
