West Virginians and Ohioans hold those who have served our country in the military in high honor.
As noted above, we have joined other Americans, sometimes, in failing to recognize properly those who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Our lapse in that regard during the Vietnam War was shameful.
For many years, Northern Panhandle and East Ohio residents have joined other Americans in doing what we can to rectify that mistake. While each year we hold many ceremonies to honor all who served, we single out veterans from the Vietnam era.
Just this week, Follansbee residents planned to bring a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial here. And in Steubenville, plans for a March 30 event honoring veterans are proceeding.
Such programs remind us of the mistake we made once - and prompt us to remember that it should never be made again.
