Wheeling police arrested Mark Wise on Wednesday for allegedly sexually abusing a 4-year-old girl he was responsible to care for at his home in May.
Ohio County Magistrate Joe Roxby on Thursday arraigned Wise, 52, of Wheeling on a charge of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or custodian. He remains in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville in lieu of $50,000 cash bond.
According to court documents, the girl revealed the alleged sex abuse to an adult family member in May, using childlike language to describe how the encounter transpired. The girl underwent an examination at Ohio Valley Medical Center days later.
She also was interviewed at child advocacy center Harmony House, where she disclosed genital to genital contact had occurred between her and Wise at his home, documents state.
The girl's mother told Wheeling police Detective Brandi Alderman that she leaves her daughter alone with Wise at his Bow Street residence most Friday nights.
Magistrate Patty Murphy issued a warrant for Wise's arrest Wednesday, which Wheeling police officers served that same day.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in front of Magistrate Harry Radcliffe. An attorney had not yet been appointed to represent Wise Thursday.
Ohio County Assistant Prosecutor Jenna Perkins will represent the state.
