Martin Purpura

PURPURA, Martin Frank, "Marty", 67, of Wheeling, W.Va., passed away Monday, April 1, 2013, in Bishop Hodges Continuous Care Center, Wheeling.

Marty was born June 3, 1945 in Wheeling, a daughter of the late Frank J. and Eva (Nakoniezny) Purpura. He was a graduate of Wheeling Central High School, attended West Liberty State College and was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral, Wheeling. He was the owner and operator of the shoe department at the former Crone's Men's Clothing Store, Wheeling; a State Auditor for the WV Racing Commission at Wheeling Downs; an avid sports car enthusiast; and a former member of the Fort Henry Club and the Wheeling Rotary. Marty was extremely proud of his son and granddaughter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Francie K. Martin.

Marty is survived by his son, Michael M. Purpura and his wife, Betsy of Honolulu, Hawaii; two sisters, Rosalie Davis and her husband, Ed and Joan Mazur and her husband, Ab, all of Wheeling; a brother, Frank J. Purpura and his wife, Sharlet of Wheeling; a loving granddaughter, Kate Pupura; and nieces and nephews, Letitia Lieb, J. David Diosi, Gwynne Yoakum, Tracy Hickey and Joe Purpura.

Friends will be received from 1-3 and 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 6 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at St. Joseph Cathedral, with Msgr. Kevin M. Quirk as celebrant. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center, 1305 National Road, Wheeling, WV or St. Joseph Cathedral, 1300 Eoff Street, Wheeling, WV.
