Burgoyne: ‘No Doubt’ Culprit Will Be Found

April 17, 2013
By SHELLEY HANSON - Staff Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

WHEELING - Tom Burgoyne, a former FBI agent who spent two-and-a-half years working in Boston, said he has no doubt those responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing will be found.

Burgoyne, former Ohio County sheriff, said Tuesday he is staying at his childhood home, located about 40 miles outside Boston. He learned the news when his daughter called to inform him.

"It's unbelievable, but it's not. We have 300 million people in this country and we have crazy guys. It's almost like they're trying to outdo each other," he said.

Burgoyne said he is not involved in the investigation, but he believes the culprit likely is a "lone wolf" or is working with two or three other people. He believes the scenario is similar to the Oklahoma City bombing, though the Boston blast was much smaller in size.

"He wanted the headlines and he's getting the headlines," Burgoyne said. "They will solve this. They will figure out who did this - there's no doubt in my mind."

Monday, he said, started out as a good day for Boston. The Red Sox won their game, leaving thousands of fans in a cheerful mood. And the marathoners were getting mild, sunny weather in which to run.

"And then all of a sudden the bombing. It took the wind out of everybody's sails," he said.

Burgoyne said law enforcement in the Boston area at the local, federal and state level have been more like rivals in the past. But now they are working side-by-side. "This may be what they needed to come together," he said.
