WHEELING - There are several factors to consider when choosing a garden tractor or push mower for your grass cutting needs, according to Kennedy Hardware Sales Manager Chuck Reed.
The size and topography of your property (hilly or flat) and obviously your budget, are just a few factors to take into consideration when choosing a mower for your lawn cutting needs.
Reed said if you choose a tractor over a push style mower you will need to consider if you will be using it for larger utility tasks other than grass cutting, such as plowing snow throughout the winter months or hauling garden supplies or tools around your property.

Whether it's cutting grass close to your house or just hauling garden supplies, Reed said there are some machines available that are good at performing both tasks.
"Especially when you get into the compact and subcompact tractors ... there are machines that you can do a lot more with now than just mow grass. There are many different variables involved now," Reed commented.
He said the new "zero turning radius" lawn tractors also are becoming very popular.
According to the Popular Mechanics website, zero radius mowers are designed to cut so closely around obstacles that they nearly eliminate the need to trim. One advantage of these machines is that they pivot through 180 degrees without leaving a circle of uncut grass.
Reed said self propelled push mowers are becoming more attractive to many people who are finding it more and more difficult to manually push a mower.
"I would say it is almost two to one now," said Reed, while commenting on the number of people purchasing a self propelled mower over a regular push mower. Obviously, Reed said people also need take their budget into consideration when purchasing lawn cutting equipment. Many stores, including Kennedy's, will work with customers to accommodate their budget need.
Reed said Kennedy Hardware carries a wide variety of mowers, tractors, carts and other lawn cutting accessories. Some of the larger name brands their store carries include: Cub Cadet, Kubota, Ventrac, Torro, and Snapper. Kennedy Hardware is located at 3300 McColloch St.
