Reduce Tax Burden On West Virginians

April 21, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

West Virginia governors and legislators have done an outstanding job of keeping state budgets balanced while providing at least some tax relief for several years. But much more needs to be done.

Each year the nonpartisan Tax Foundation calculates "tax freedom day" dates for the nation and each state. The dates are the point at which the "average" resident has earned enough to pay all his or her taxes for that year.

"Tax freedom day" in West Virginia this year was April 19, according to the foundation's calculations. That was one day later than the national average. It also was later than in any adjoining state, except for Virginia (April 20). In contrast, Kentucky's tax burden is low enough that its "freedom day" fell on April 6.

Again, lawmakers and governors have done well on fiscal matters for several years - but more progress needs to be a priority for state officials.
