WOOLUMS, Ned William, of St. Clairsville, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2013 surrounded by his family at his home. He was 80 years old.
Ned was born on October 30, 1932 in Columbus, Ohio to John and Elsie Westrich Woolums.
He was a graduate of North High in Columbus, class of 1950, and graduated from Otterbein College in 1954. Ned was an army veteran of the Korean War.
After serving in Korea and Japan he received his M.A. in Counseling and Guidance at The Ohio State University. He worked as a teacher and guidance counselor in Versailles, Ohio schools and the Southwestern School District in Grove City, Ohio. He married Jean Veley on June 15, 1963, and moved to Belmont County, where he worked as School Psychologist in the Martins Ferry Schools for one year, then for several years in Belmont, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties. He retired from Jefferson County Schools in 1997, then worked in the Toronto City Schools until December 2012. From 1963 to 1996 he worked as an adjunct professor in psychology at Ohio University Eastern and was a member of the Community Mental Health Board for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sue Ann Jones.
He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Jean Ann (Veley) Woolums; daughter, Marianne and her husband Jeff Madzia of St. Clairsville; sons, John and his wife Jenni Kamp Woolums of Annapolis, Maryland, and Ted and his wife Mary Seich Woolums of Massillon, Ohio. Grandchildren are Juliana and Alex Madzia, Calder and Sean Woolums, and Joseph and Caroline Woolums.
Ned was a charter member of the Ohio Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation, having helped found the church in 1975. He served as an officer in the congregation and sang in the choir.
Ned is well known for his Japanese Garden and Tea House in his yard at his home. He performed the Japanese tea ceremony and gave tours of his garden to many friends over the last 15 years. Ned was a worldwide traveler and especially enjoyed going to Canada, Asia and Europe.
Friends will be received at Toothman's Funeral Home in St. Clairsville from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, May 10, and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 11. A memorial service will be held there at 1 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Maurine Waun officiating.
