Weekend Wrap: Kowalo Leads Way for Patriots

April 23, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

WHEELING - The cat is out of the bag when it comes to the Wheeling Park baseball team: it's good.

Part of the Patriots success has been the play of shortstop Andrew Kowalo.

The four-year starter is batting a sizzling .418 in 55 at-bats to help coach Mike McLeod's club garner a 18-2 record and the No. 1 rank in the OVAC Class 5A poll.

Kowalo, however, isn't exactly bursting onto the scene as he managed 42 hits in his sophomore and junior seasons for a .383 average.

The senior's talents also extend to the mound where he has fanned 34 batters in 33 innings and has posted a 1.27 ERA.

Kowalo may have been at his best on April 3 in Morgantown as Park faced off with University.

The senior went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and scored two runs to help the Patriots pull off a 15-8 triumph against the Hawks.

A multi-sport athlete, Kowalo was also a forward on coach Michael Jebbia's basketball team, where he averaged nearly six points and seven rebounds a night.

The senior is expected to sign this week at Potomac State where he will continue his baseball career.
