W.Va. Netters Prep for Regional Tournaments

West Liberty University, Parkersburg playing host

WHEELING - Several local tennis players will try to earn a trip to Charleston for the West Virginia state tournament as Class AAA regional action will be held on the campus of West Liberty University on Thursday and Friday.

The tournament is set to begin at 10 a.m. both days as the first two rounds of Singles and Doubles play will be held on Friday with the finals and consolations matches finishing up the next day.

On the boys' side, John Marshall's Hayden Blazer leads the pack as the highest-seeded local player. Blazer owns the No. 2 seed in No. 1 Singles and will faces Morgantown's Alex Albuquerque in the semifinals. He will be joined in No. 1 Doubles play with Tyler Keller, the team's No. 3 Singles player. John Miller (No. 2 Singles, No. 2 Doubles), Austin Litman (No. 4 Singles, No. 3 Doubles) Ralph Howe (No. 2 Doubles) and Ryan Hooker (No. 3 Doubles) will also represent the Monarchs.

Wheeling Park is lead in No. 1 Singles by Shaun Hunley. Hunley will compete with Mitch Baranski (No. 2 Singles) in No. 1 Doubles. Zac Marra (No. 3 Singles, No. 2 Doubles), Austin Evans (No. 4 Singles, No. 3 Doubles) and Rishi Chandrasekhar (No. 4 Doubles) also will take the court for the Patriots.

Jackson Carey (No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles), Ryan Mezan (No. 2 Singles, No. 1 Doubles), Bryce Kesling (No. 3 Singles, No. 2 Doubles), Brice Hickey (No. 4 Singles, No. 2 Doubles) leads Brooke, while Matt Beaman and Ben Barnhart will handle No. 3 Doubles.

On the girls' side, Lexi Patterson holds the No. 2 seed in top-ranked Singles action to lead Park. She will be joined by Emily Capehart (No. 2 Singles) in No. 2 Doubles. McKenzie Rodgers (No. 3 Singles, No. 2 Doubles) and Megan Randolph (No. 4 Singles, No. 2 Doubles) round out the Patriots' squad.

Brooke will be represented by Kameron Miller (No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles), Lauren Shelton (No. 2 Singles, No. 1 Doubles), Cassidy Bland (No. 3 Singles, No. 2 Doubles), Angie Counselman (No. 4 Singles, No. 2 Doubles), Kayli Stewart (No. 3 Doubles) and Kylie Greathouse (No. 3 Doubles).

Alaina Pauley leads the Monarchs at No. 1 Singles and Doubles. Brittany Anderson (No. 2 Singles, No. 1 Doubles), Anna Tordella (No. 3 Singles, No. 2 Doubles) and Samantha Rulong (No. 4 Singles, No. 2 Doubles) round out JM.

Anthony Zorne, Stuebenville: Zorne struck out 10 in a victory against Buckeye Local.

Kyle Elliott, Magnolia: Elliott collected 12 Ks in a victory against Shenandoah.

Tyler Owens, Toronto: Owens fanned 10 in a loss to Steubenville Catholic.

Amy Rotriga, John Marshall: Rotriga fanned 21 in a nine-inning victory against Edison.

Hannah Absalom, St. John: Absalom fanned 17 in a victory against Paden City, the first of her back-to-back no-hitters in the OVAC Tournament.

Brandon Stoneking, Valley: Stoneking stuck out 17 in a victory against Doddridge.

D.J. Shoemaker, St. John: Shoemaker collected 11 Ks in a loss to East Richland Christian.

First No-No

Jake Starkey, Magnolia: Starkey had his first career no-hitter as he struck out 13 and walked one in 69 pitches thrown in his second start of the season.

Evan Westlake, Steubenville: Westlake homered in a victory against Buckeye Local.

Matt Vucelick, Bishop Doanhue: Vucelick hit one over the fence in a victory against Paden City.

Jesse Hartley, Wheeling Park: Hartley hit a homer in a victory against John Marshall.

Joel Giffin, St. Clairsville: Giffin had a home run in a victory against Wheeling Central.

Will Bowser, Madonna: Bowser homered in a victory against Bishop Donahue.

Hunter Kaschke, Bishop Donahue: Kaschke smacked a home run in a victory against Paden City.

Will Larch, Weir: Larch blasted one over the fence in loss to John Marshall.

Ali Bethel, Union Local: Bethel homered twice in a loss to Edison.
