At one time, those who misused medicines intended to help people were referred to as "recreational" drug abusers. Ask Melody Fisher if she thinks there is anything "recreational" about her experience.
Fisher, of Beech Bottom, entered a plea Tuesday morning to charges connected with the attempted robbery of a Wheeling pharmacy last spring. The 41-year-old woman is likely to spend much of the rest of her life behind bars.
Fisher helped Kevin Walnoha, 37, of Wellsburg, plan the robbery. She "cased" the store, then waited outside in a car while Walnoha went inside with a gun, in an attempt to steal drugs. A pharmacy employee, fearing for his own safety and that of other workers, shot Walnoha dead.
Drug abuse killed Walnoha. Drug abuse is sending Fisher to prison. His is only one of many lives cut short by drug abuse in our area. Hers is one of many more ruined by drugs.
"Recreational"? If you are abusing drugs or are tempted to do so, think about Walnoha and Fisher. If you know an addict, get help for him or her, whether it is desired or not.
Do it before it is too late.
