Woman Hospitalized After Being Pummeled by Crowd

By TYLER REYNARD - Staff Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

A group of attackers beat a Martins Ferry woman with bricks, rocks and brass knuckles Tuesday night in the streets of East Wheeling, landing her in a local hospital.

The crowd was arguing near 13th Street and Lane 10 around 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, according to Deputy Police Chief Martin Kimball. Officers arrived on the scene and separated the disorderly group before things turned violent.

Police were later called to Ohio Valley Medical Center, where they met with the 23-year-old victim, whose name police did not release.

She told officers she was walking away from the group when they attacked her, pummeling her with bricks and rocks, punching her with brass knuckles and stomping on her with their feet.

Comments the woman made on Facebook about a man spurred the attack, Kimball said.

The victim was treated and has since been released. OVMC spokeswoman Laurie Labishak did not elaborate on the extent of the woman's injuries. The injured woman identified three of her attackers by name, according to Kimball, and investigators are working to contact those suspects as well as witnesses to the crime. No arrests had been made as of late Wednesday.
