PARKERSBURG - The Wheeling Central boys' tennis team is the Class AA/A Region I champion for a second consecutive year.
The Maroon Knights scored 21 points at the event held at the Erickson All-Sports Facility to edge Madonna (20) and St. Marys (19) to earn the title.
The top four finishers at No. 1 Singles, the top three at No. 2, the top two at No. 3 and the champion at No. 4 earned berths to the state tournament in Charleston, as did the top three pairs in No. 1 Doubles, top two No. 2 Doubles and the champion of No. 3 Doubles.
Junior Jonathan Haley (No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles) will make a return trip to the state meet, while senior Brett Szeligo (No. 2 Singles, No. 1 Doubles), senior Daniel Lee (No. 2 Doubles), senior Ben Gordon (No. 3 Doubles) and junior Billy Teufel (No. 3 Doubles) will also represent the Maroon Knights in the state capital. Freshman Gus Schmidt earned the regional title at No. 3 Singles to also qualify and will also compete at No. 2 doubles.
Junior Joanna Capito came away with the regional crown at No. 1 Singles and was the only member of the Maroon Knight's girls team to qualify for states.
The girls overall championship plaque went to Oak Glen.
Madonna will also be sending a host of Blue Dons to Charleston led by Nick Conforti, who defeated Haley for the No. 1 Singles title, and Matt Conforti, who also won the regional crown at No. 2 Singles. The two brothers will compete at No. 1 Doubles where they pick up another regional championship.
Thomas Gianni won at No. 4 Singles to also qualify for the Blue Dons, while Ali Welch qualified for No. 2 Singles.
Oak Glen will be represented by Haley Spurlock (No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles), Abbi Sayre (No. 3 Singles, No. 2 Doubles), No. 4 Singles regional champ Madison Juszczak (No. 1 Doubles), Anna Crawford (No. 2 Doubles) and No. 3 Doubles regional champions Madison Hill and Lauren Pizzurro.
In Class AAA action held on the campus of West Liberty University, Hayden Blazer and Alaina Pauley both punched their tickets in No. 1 Singles for John Marshall, while Wheeling Park's Shaun Hunley and Mitch Baranski qualified in No. 3 Doubles.
The state tournament will be held May 9-11.
