VARLAS, Elizabeth M. (Smith), 89, of Warwood Terrace, Wheeling, died May 8, 2013, at Bishop Joseph Hodges Continuous Care Center in Wheeling.
Libby was born May 23, 1923, the daughter of the late Mary Mae (Blake) and Vernon Leslie Smith of McMechen.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Gus Varlas, in 2007; sons, Richard John in 1987 and Thomas Paul in 1971; brothers, Vernon, Wallace and Donald Smith; sisters, Dorothy Patrick, Mildred Buzzard, and Blanche Pearl, and daughter-in-law, Wende Stilwell Varlas.
Libby was a graduate of St. James Grade School and Union High School in McMechen. She was a long-time member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Warwood, where she served as a CCD teacher and past president of the Parent Teachers Guild. In addition to being a home maker, she volunteered at Wheeling Hospital for over 40 years.
Libby is survived by her sons, Robert Joseph (Becky) of Newark, Delaware, James Leslie (Barbara) of Wheeling; granddaughters, Laura Varlas of Washington, D.C., Kristin Varlas of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Emily Varlas of New York, New York; grandsons, Andrew, Aaron, and Aric Varlas, all of Wheeling; a brother, Paul Smith of Wheeling; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Libby was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt to her family, and always loved any child with whom she came into contact. She found strength in her Catholic faith, and lived a very happy life, even with the tragic loss of her sons.
The family would like to thank the caring and loving staff at Bishop Hodges Continuous Care Center, and requests that any donations in Libby's memory be made to Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Wheeling, WV.
Friends will be received on Sunday, May 12, 2013 form 5-8 p.m. at the Kepner Funeral Home, Burke Chapel, 2101 Warwood Ave (304-277-2722). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 13, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. with Monsignor Eugene S. Ostrowski as celebrant. Interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
