WHEELING - Ohio County Prosecutor Scott Smith and police Detective Greg Harris on Friday reviewed the investigation into the death of a man who was punched and fell from a porch in Fulton, striking his head on the concrete pavement below.

Anthony Demello, 22, of Benwood, was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon at Wheeling Hospital, where he was being treated in the critical care unit.

Police said Demello was arguing with a group of people on the porch at 50 Joan Street around 2:10 a.m. Thursday. A man, who witnesses knew only as Sean, allegedly struck Demello, causing him to fall from the porch and strike his head on the sidewalk.

Sean had left the scene by the time police arrived, but witnesses told officers that he lives in the Fulton area.

"We went over the investigation and I have not made any decisions about having a warrant issued at this time," Smith said of his meeting with Harris.

Demello was suffering from an obvious head injury and was unresponsive when officers arrived at the residence. Wheeling Fire Department officials transported him to the hospital.

Police officers were called to the same home, where 25-year-old Charles Mitchum lives, earlier that night. In that incident, Demello and a man witnesses knew only as B.J. allegedly got into a fist fight over a girl. B.J. was gone by the time police arrived.

Police said Demello was intoxicated, and although he was bleeding from his lip and nose, he did not wish to pursue charges, so officers left the scene. Demello reportedly left, as well, before returning to the house and getting into an argument.
