Learn About Plant Proposal

May 12, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Editor, News-Register:

I am writing to promote awareness of the proposed Green Hunter frack waste treatment facility which is set to begin construction in June. The facilty is located 1.2 miles north of our public water treatment facility in Warwood.

There are still many concerns that local residents have about the facility. One of the concerns is the types of hazardous wastes that will be handled at the facility. Are these hazardous materials going to cause harm to our local residents? Many people are unaware of what all is going on in areas that have already had fracking. Please look through this list at pennsylvaniaallianceforcleanwaterandair.wordpress.com/the-list/. There are over 1,200 documented cases of people and animals being harmed by being in contact with these hazardous materials.

For the people who say there is no radiation in fracking wastes and materials, please read through this: rt.com/usa/fracking-debris-radiation-pennsylvania-461/. Once stuff is polluted with radioactive wastes, is it able to be cleaned up? What if there is a flood at this facility? What if the barges leak? Is this too close to residential facilities? Is this too close to our public walking trail? Since it is a one of a kind facility, how can you guarantee that it is safe? What if there are barge explosions like the one noted here: www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57581435/spark-from-cleaning-caused-barge-explosion-coast-guard? There is no safety track record on it.

I really care about my community. I want to keep it a safe and healthy place to live. I ask everyone to check into all of this before we just go into something for the sake of profit that may end up costing us all way more than it is worth in the end. Sometimes all the money in the world can't buy back good health.

I would like to let everyone know about some upcoming meetings. I hope everyone can get involved.

1. The FACT-OV Meeting (a fracking awareness group open to anyone interested in any aspects of fracking) will meet at the Ohio County Public Library on Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. A special speaker will be on hand on Tuesday. All are invited and welcome to attend. Pat Jacobson is the point of contact for the group. She can be reached at 304-242-8873 if you need further information on the group.

2. The BZA meeting on May 16 at 9:30 a.m. (Zoning Commission) at City County Building. The proposal to change the property by the river from residential to industrial will be addressed here. It is a public hearing on any variances asked to be granted. Also, there is a board of zoning appeals website at www.wheelingwv.gov/citygovernment.php?id=216.

3. City Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 21, at 5:30 p.m. Please go to www.wheelingwv.gov/citygovernment.php?id=70 for more information on the upcoming meetings

4. A community meeting on May 22 at 7 p.m. to be held in Council Chambers with representatives from Green Hunter Energy.

5. The Planning Commission meeting scheduled for May 13 has been moved to June 13 at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers. This is not a public hearing, but the site plan for the Green Hunter Energy facility will be there for public viewing. Please go to the website www.wheelingwv.gov/citygovernment.php?id=206 for more information on this.

Furthermore, there are many concerned citizens working to keep our water clean and safe. Information can be found at www.facebook.com/wheelingwaterwarriors. Also, there is a petition to oppose the proposed Green Hunter frack waste treatment plant at www.change.org/petitions/wheeling-city-council-oppose-the-greenhunter-fracking-wastewater-treatment-plant-in-warwood.

In closing, I ask everyone to first research things with an open mind, educate yourself, and get involved to help our communtiy the best place it can be. I ask you to attend a meeting, make a call, write a letter, or sign a petition. The time is now.
