May 12, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

DeCOLA, Eugene John, born in Shadyside, Ohio on July 11, 1927, to the late Domenic and Lucia DeCola and longtime resident of Worthington, passed away May 9, 2013.

Eugene graduated from Shadyside High School, where he was an accomplished athlete, and West Liberty College on scholarship.

He proudly served in the Navy during WWII. Afterwards he taught in the Worthington School System and served as vice principal at Linworth Elementary.

He was active in The Worthington Boosters, key in helping to build Worthington's indoor pool. After teaching, he became a successful custom homebuilder, was a member of the BIA of Central Ohio and participated in several Parade of Homes.

He loved the outdoors and was fortunate to have traveled near and far for many hunting and fishing adventures. Eugene was a generous man who, without hesitation, was always ready to help anyone in need.

He is survived by three daughters, Diana (Tommaso) Ciaffoncini, Christal (Andrew) McDowell and Suellen (Gary Perrine) DeCola; grandchildren Giannalisa (David) Schumer and Alessandro Ciaffoncini; brothers, Tom (Phyllis) DeCola and Ramon DeCola; numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved cat, Boca.

He will truly and sadly be missed by his family and many friends. Special thanks go to Dr. Elizabeth Unk, Riverside Methodist Hospital, The Sanctuary at Tuttle Crossing and Odyssey Hospice for their kind and thoughtful care.

Family will receive visitors at the Weir-Arend Funeral Home, 4221 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio (3 blocks S. of Henderson Rd.) on Monday, May 13, 2013, from 8:30-10 a.m.

The funeral procession will depart at 10 a.m to Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 N. High St., Lewis Center, for the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. (Fr. Mark Summers Celebrant).

A gathering for family and friends will be held afterwards at the American Legion, Post 329, 700 Morning St., Worthington. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society are appreciated.
