MOUNDSVILLE - A city sanitation worker was killed on the job Friday morning by a tree limb that fell after being damaged by recent storms, according to police Sgt. Don Dewitt.

The man was either walking along or riding the back of a garbage truck around 7:48 a.m. on North Hickory Avenue when the truck brushed a tree limb hanging close to the roadway, Dewitt said. The storm-damaged limb then broke loose and struck the worker.

The man suffered head injuries and was taken to Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, where he was pronounced dead.

"It was a complete freak accident," Dewitt said. "It was unbelievable."

Police have not yet released the name of the worker since not all family members had been notified of his death late Friday.

The accident is under investigation, Dewitt said.

Mayor Gene Saunders declined comment on the incident until the investigation of the accident is complete. City Manager Deanna Hess was not available for comment Friday.
