Long-distance running may be the supreme test of an individual's skill and ability, both physically and mentally, in many ways. But staging an event such as this weekend's Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic is an extraordinary challenge of teamwork.
Once again this year, the Half Marathon Classic team has met and conquered the challenge.
Hundreds of volunteers with help from many sponsors, organizations and local government entities plan and execute events that are part of race weekend in Wheeling. And, as we have noted for many years, the community becomes part of the team, too, supporting walkers and runners throughout the race course.
Race Director R. "Scat" Scatterday and Co-Directors Tim Birch, Shellie Higgins and Rusty Jebbia coordinate the work of 27 other men and women who, in turn, enlist aid from many other volunteers to make the race go off without a hitch. Cooperation from the city of Wheeling, especially from the Police Department, is superb. And year after year, sponsors who understand the race's importance to the community step up with support.
It really is a team effort on behalf of a wonderful tradition. Congratulations, then, to competitors - and the team that makes the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic possible.
