Why Are We Painting Panhandle Purple?

May 26, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Editor, News-Register:

What are all the purple flags for???? This year's Brooke Hancock Counties Relay for Life Committee has Painted the Panhandle Purple. With the cooperation of all the towns and villages between Beech Bottom and Chester, we have managed to paint our portion of the panhandle purple. Marshall and Ohio Counties have joined the campaign but I have not received an update yet.

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Brooke/Hancock counties initiated the program last year with the Paint the Town Purple Campaign. Why purple? Purple is the American Cancer Society's color for cancer survivors. Therefore, the purple flags are celebrating the cancer survivors in the Northern Panhandle. Every year during our Relay for Life event, we celebrate the survivors; remember those we have lost to cancer and fight back. We raise funds to help support research, education and advocacy. This year's Brooke/Hancock Counties Relay For Life will be held at Follansbee Middle School Football Field on June 1-2. The opening ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m. on the 1st and the event will close at 6 a.m. on the 2nd. There will be food, entertainment, kids' games, a firefighter challenge, team games, a cake walk and of course our luminaria ceremony.

Everyone is invited. Please come out and help us celebrate, remember and fight back. The Brooke/Hancock Counties Relay For Life is also hosting a parade in Follansbee on May 28 at 7 p.m. The parade will start at Follansbee Middle School and end at the Garibaldi Lodge. Once again the purple flags celebrate cancer survivors in our area and all over the country. Thank you again to all the towns, villages, schools, businesses and residents that helped us Paint the Panhandle Purple. See you on May 28 and June 1.
