Give Wheeling Statue of A.I. Boreman, Too

A scale model, or maquette, of a bronze statue of Francis H. Pierpont, known by many as "the father of West Virginia," was unveiled last week. Fundraising for the statue, to be placed at West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling, is in progress.

Pierpont, who was governor of the Restored Government of Virginia during the Civil War and the architect of statehood for West Virginia, certainly deserves to be honored here in Wheeling.

But so does our state's first governor, Arthur I. Boreman, of Tyler County.

So let's raise the money for the Pierpont statue, then move on quickly to a similar one honoring Boreman. Both men should be recognized here in Wheeling, where the state was founded.
