June 23, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

FREESE, Gene, 79, passed away June 19, 2013 in Metairie, Louisiana.

Born January 8, 1934, Gene graduated from Wheeling High School in 1951.

He was a 3-sport athlete at West Liberty State College (now University). He began his 12-season Major League Baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955. A third baseman, Gene also played with the Cardinals, Phillies, White Sox, Astros, and most notably the 1961 National League Champion Cincinnatti Reds. He then managed the AA Minor League Shreveport Captains before retiring.

Gene is a member of the Wheeling Hall of Fame, the Diamond Club Hall of Fame, and the New Orleans Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.

Regardless of his travels, he was proud of his home state of West Virginia and always pulled for WVU and West Lib teams, all the way from New Orleans, where he raised his family and was well-loved in the community.

Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Elmer, and sister, Verna Mae.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; his brother, George; his sons, Tim (Daphne) and Terry (Gayle); his daughter, Amy Freese-Carter (Daniel); and many loving grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday afternoon, June 24, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans, LA.
